This large sandy beach is located on Wellington's south coast. It is a popular surf, kite-boarding and swimming beach. The gentle slope of the beach allows bathers to get some distance out into the bay before getting out of their depth. The beach is generally safe for swimming and popular with families, but southerly swells can create dangerous waves. It is patrolled by lifeguards over summer weekends from early November to late March and all week during January. Parking is convenient all along the waterfront and a playground, changing facilities and toilets are located on the beach. This site is monitored as a part of Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Recreational Water Quality Monitoring Programme, which is specifically designed to inform the public about the suitability of various sites across the region for swimming and other recreational activities.
