Lake Benmore at Pumpkin Bay

This grassy beach area perfect for swimming and picnicking. The lake was created in the 1960s by the creation of the Benmore dam as part of the Waitaki hydroelectricity power scheme. The lake covers close to 75km area and is fed by the Ahuriri, Ohau, Pukaki, Tekapo Rivers.
Lake Benmore is a large hydro lake with a number of camping grounds and boat access. This site is located just off SH83 with a parking area to the side of the road, and a grassy beach area on the lake shore. This site is monitored for recreational water quality during the summer months only.
