Gilgo State Park is located on a barrier beach on the south shore of Long Island, with views of the Atlantic Ocean and Great South Bay. Gilgo Park is undeveloped and has fewer amenities than most, but spectacular views and serenity make it a popular destination. The park is actively managed for the protection of the sea beach amaranth and the piping plover; employees can provide education to visitors regarding habitat management. Fishing is abundant in the fall during the striped bass migration. Anglers can enjoy catching blue fish and a variety of saltwater species from April 1 to December 31, 24 hours a day, with a New York State Sport Fishing Permit. While a small community of beach houses abuts the beach, non-locals can park and visit for $30 a weekend. Access to the park is best via 4-wheel drive, which requires a permit. Handicap accessible. This is a Tier III beach.
