Fort Baker was built in the early 20th Century. During World War II, it was used to load underwater mines onto ships and to help repair smaller boats. Soldiers left Fort Baker in 2000, though the US Coast Guard station remains active. The Bay Area Discovery Museum for kids moved here in 1991 and offers a wide range of award winning indoor and outdoor programs. There are 3 sampling locations here, in the southwest, northwest, and northeast corners of Horseshoe Cove.
