Cornwallis Beach
Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
In 1863 New Zealand was struck by it's greatest maritime disaster. The Royal Navy's HMS Orpheus hit a moving sand bar and fell to it's side. The Manukau Harbor's water pounded on the ship, destroying it and killing 189 off its officers. 3 of the sailors graves can be found on the Orpheus Graves Walk South of the beach.
The beach is now part of the Waitakere Ranges. This small section includes picnic facilities with bbq's, a boat ramp, toilets, and parking. The area is perfect for swimming, fishing, boating and exploring. Limited mobility toilets and access is available by the main picnic area.
