Blockhouse Bay Beach
Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
The creation of Blockhouse Bay Beach started in the 1930's but it's rich history began well before that. The area originally known as Te Whau Point, was inhabited by the Māori. After colonization the Point was used by the military as a sentry post. In 1863 an on duty sentry's musket was struck by lightning, destroying the musket and leaving the sentry unconscious for several hours. This was the first recorded lightning strike.
The Point has degraded over time and cliff's face has noticeably changed. Facilities now include the Blockhouse Bay Explorer walking track, a child's playground, parking, boat ramp, toilets and changing station.
